Race Director - Chad Sperry

A resident of Oregon since 1983 Chad has had the fortune of growing up in the state and enjoying all the opportunities available. In high school he was drawn to endurance sports running both cross-country and track before making the transition to triathlons and cycling. Chad first got his taste of mt. bike racing in 1990 at the Gorge Pro/Am Race held in Mosier, Oregon. While attending the University of Idaho he began to focus his attention on triathlons and duathlons becoming one of the top ranked juniors in the U.S. After completing his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology in 1995 Chad turned his focus to cycling competing both on and off road. In August of 1997 he got his first opportunity to promote an event by taking over as race director for the Oregon State Hill Climb Championships that ran from Government Camp to Timberline Lodge. In 1999 he directed the Oregon State Road Cycling Championships out of The Dalles, Oregon which marked the first time an event of this nature had been brought to the Columbia River Gorge. In 2002 he again directed and promoted the Oregon State Road Cycling Championships, this time in Parkdale, Oregon.

Having logged thousands of road miles throughout the Columbia River Gorge area while training and racing Chad and his cycling teammate Jeff Lorenzen developed the concept and idea for a large scale multi-day road cycling event that would be similar in format to the Tour de France. In 2003 that concept was rolled out as the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic. The first year of the event saw nearly 260 riders from across the Pacific Northwest and covered 200 miles of racing and 20,000 feet of elevation. In 2005 the event turned pro and was accepted into the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar. Now drawing over 500 riders from around the world and covering nearly 400 miles over 6 days, the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic is one of the top ranked races in the nation. In 2007 Chad was given the tremendous opportunity to take over as race director of the Cascade Cycling Classic in Bend, Oregon. This event is one of the oldest races in the country with its inception back in 1979 and running every year since. Some of the top cyclists in the world at one time or another have competed at Cascade including Lance Armstrong.

In his spare time Chad loves to mt. bike, climb, hike, rock climb, fish and chase his kid’s all over the ski slopes. He is married to Lori Waters and has four energetic boys named Mitchell, Ben, Kaleb, and Luke. They live in The Dalles and take every opportunity they can to get out and enjoy the spectacular beauty the Northwest has to offer.
